Who We Are

About Us

Chicago’s Finest Marina — Where History, Heritage, and the Waterfront Come Together Family-Owned. Historically Significant. Community-Focused. Nestled along the banks of Chicago's historic Little Calumet River, Chicago’s Finest Marina is proudly owned and operated by the Gaines Family. Recognized as the oldest Black-owned marina in the Chicagoland area, our marina represents more than a place to dock a boat. It is a destination where family, recreation, community, and African American history come together. Since acquiring the property in 2005, the Gaines Family has worked to preserve its unique character while creating a welcoming environment for boaters, families, and visitors throughout the Chicago metropolitan area. Our Marina & Amenities Chicago’s Finest Marina offers a variety of services and amenities designed to meet the needs of recreational boaters and waterfront visitors, including: Indoor and outdoor boat storage Seasonal boat slips and dock rentals Picnic and outdoor recreational areas Waterfront gatherings and community events Whether you're looking for reliable boat storage, convenient access to the Little Calumet River, or a beautiful waterfront setting to enjoy with family and friends, Chicago’s Finest Marina welcomes you. A Historic Stop on the Underground Railroad What makes Chicago’s Finest Marina truly extraordinary is the history beneath its grounds. During the mid-1850s, Dutch immigrants Jan and Aagje Ton settled on the property and became part of a network of abolitionists who helped enslaved African Americans escape bondage and pursue freedom. Their farm served as a refuge and stopping point along the Underground Railroad, providing assistance to freedom seekers traveling through the Chicago area toward Canada. The property's historical significance was formally recognized through its inclusion in the National Park Service's Network to Freedom program, honoring its important role in the struggle for freedom. Today, the Gaines Family takes tremendous pride in preserving this history and sharing the stories of the courageous individuals who traveled through these grounds. Preserving the Past. Building the Future. For the Gaines Family, owning Chicago’s Finest Marina carries a responsibility that extends far beyond operating a waterfront business. As Black owners of property that once served as a refuge for people escaping slavery, the family recognizes the powerful connection between the site's past and its future. Our vision is to continue developing Chicago’s Finest Marina into a vibrant waterfront destination that combines boating, recreation, historical education, cultural preservation, and community engagement. Through special events, educational opportunities, and future improvements, we aim to ensure that this remarkable piece of Chicago history remains accessible and meaningful for generations to come. Chicago’s Finest Marina is more than a marina. It's a place where the journey to freedom is remembered, family traditions are celebrated, and new memories are made. Chicago’s Finest Marina — Rooted in History. Driven by Family. Dedicated to Community.
